Friends of the Cancer Centre Scholarship winners 2017

Since 2008, Friends of the Cancer Centre has been investing in the training and development of cancer services staff through our Scholarship Programme.  Our scholarships provide funding for staff to attend training or educational courses which will enhance their skills and enable them to remain at the forefront of some of the latest developments in research, treatment techniques and patient care, which they can then use to benefit patients locally.

The Dr Gary McGowan Scholarship, the Pamela Lutton Scholarship, and the Pearl Ewing Scholarship have all been named and dedicated to late friends and colleagues in the Cancer Centre who themselves were champions of further career development and who each strived for professional excellence for the good of their patients.  We are delighted to announce the following winners of this year’s scholarships:

The Pamela Lutton Scholarship 2017 is open to therapy radiographers working in the Cancer Centre and provides funding for a training or educational course.  This year’s scholarship has been awarded to Jean Smith, Radiotherapy Section Manager at the Cancer Centre, who will use the scholarship funding to attend the ESTRO IGRT School in Athens.

The Dr Gary McGowan Scholarship 2017 is awarded to those staff in the Cancer Centre seeking to enhance their career through a training or educational course, or academic or training related travel.  This year’s scholarship has been awarded to Dr Gerard Walls to support his Masters in Clinical Education.

The Pearl Ewing Scholarship 2017 is open to all health care professionals working in cancer services to fund, or part fund, a training or educational course.  This year’s scholarship has been awarded to Gemma McCann and Elaine Kelly, both Clinical Technologists in the Cancer Centre’s Medical Physics department.  Gemma and Elaine will both attend the ESTRO Advanced Treatment Planning Course in Barcelona.
