Applegreen Northern Ireland raise £280K to support young people with cancer

Since partnering with Friends of the Cancer Centre in 2018, Applegreen Northern Ireland have raised over £280,000, helping fund 11,240 hours of vital nursing care and support for hundreds of young people with cancer across Northern Ireland.

The money has been raised through a range of fundraising activities, with all of the Applegreen staff across Northern Ireland engaged through their own in-store events, bbq’s, quiz nights, family fun days, coffee mornings, ‘soak a manager’ days, and much more. Applegreen staff have also been fantastic supporters of our annual events such as Take on the Tower Superhero Abseil and the Slieve Donard Challenge over the years.

Customers are invited to show their support on quarterly barcode days and in addition, the charity receives a donation of 1p for every fuel purchase or shop transaction through the Applegreen Charitable Fund’s ‘You buy, We Give’ initiative.

Speaking about the partnership, Sophie Templar, Regional Co-ordinator for Applegreen Northern Ireland said:

“We have a company wide goal to always do better for our communities and the partnership is a great example of this as it is local to each of our 5 sites. All of the charity events create that community spirit and team bonding, for example the Stairway to Heaven allowed colleagues from different sites get to know each other and create a relationship with each other at the same time as raising much needed funds. Our charity champions are getting to experience different tasks outside of their units, put their ideas forward and have fun organising events. Our colleagues are so passionate about the partnership as it is close to each and every one of us some way or another. We are so proud of how far our partnership has come over the last 6 years and the impact we have made, creating a real and meaningful difference for so many local young people and their families.”

Commenting on how important the support of Applegreen Northern Ireland is to the charity, Friends of the Cancer Centre’s CEO, Ana Wilkinson, said:

“Our friends in Applegreen Northern Ireland are incredible. Since the partnership started in 2018, both the charity and the company have committed resources such as a dedicated staff member to coordinate activities within each organisation. This has proved key and significantly contributes to this being a mutually beneficial partnership which has developed year on year. Most importantly hundreds of young people with cancer have received direct care and support, thanks to the generosity of the colleagues at Applegreen and their customers and clients. We are looking forward to another successful year of fundraising and awareness raising in 2024.”
