March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, which remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers amongst men in Northern Ireland. Friends of the Cancer Centre very proudly supports two specialist nurses and a Clinical Oncologist who care for those affected by this disease. We are delighted that one of our friends has chosen to share his experiences.

Richard Collins, 61, from Omagh was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022. He has been supported by our Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Professor Suneil Jain and Urology Nurse, Olivia, ever since.

Richard explains:

“I was diagnosed with stage two prostate cancer in October 2022, following a routine Well Man check and a subsequent identified Gleason score of 7.

“My initial engagement with cancer services was at Altnagelvin, where I had an MRI scan and biopsy procedure. Staff were open and caring, they were empathetic and kind during the appointment where the diagnosis was imparted. They were very helpful in discussing my options for treatment, which included removal, Radiotherapy and Brachytherapy.

“Having decided that Brachytherapy was my first choice (a type of internal radiation therapy in which seeds that contain a radiation source are placed in your body, in or near the tumour), I attended the Belfast City Hospital and met Professor Jain and his team. They were exceptionally focused and precise, and I immediately felt reassured that I was in the safest hands possible. They communicated on a very human level, and at all times displayed real empathy and understanding of what I facing. Thankfully, I was a suitable candidate for Brachytherapy, and I had one 45 minute procedure in January 2023.

“I have been on follow-up ever since, and in recent times this has been with Olivia, my specialist nurse. She has been a delight to talk to, and has taken time to go through many aspects of my recovery. Any administration issues are always dealt with in an exemplary manner, Olivia is very empathetic and she just beams with encouragement.

“Thankfully my treatment journey has been very positive, and my recovery, whilst challenging at times, has been a relatively smooth journey. The treatment I received has allowed me to return to my work in architecture and surveying, as well as enjoying time as a Holocaust educator and an avid gardener!”

“Overall, I could not speak highly enough of those I have met in this journey, I am so grateful to everyone I’ve encountered during the last two years. The support that Friends of the Cancer Centre provides for roles like Professor Jain’s and Olivia’s is absolutely vital in providing guidance and care for those diagnosed with prostate cancer. Thank you to everyone who generously supports the work of the charity as you are enabling Friends of the Cancer Centre to fund these important roles.”
