September 24th is World Cancer Research Day, showcasing the importance of research in advancing treatment and care for those affected by cancer.
The charity is delighted to be able to support local cancer research through our partnership with the Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Network. This funding provides key infrastructure for clinical trials, allowing local patients access to up to date trials which investigate new ways to treat cancer and to improve quality of life for those living with cancer.
The charity’s funding supports nine vital posts through the NI Cancer Trials Network, including our staff member ‘In Focus’ for September – Sara, Clinical Research Nurse.
Sara works on early phase clinical trials, meaning that those taking part in these trials may be amongst the first patients to be given a new treatment.
Sara provides nursing care by:
- Offering information on trials and translating what is involved for patients.
- Supporting patients and their families at the vital decision making stage, when they choose to take part in the trial.
- Acting as a key worker, ensuring she is on hand to support both patients and their loved ones.
- Helping patients to deal with any side effects or toxicities of their treatment.
- Ensuring awareness and safety of patients during all stages of the trial.
Our funding for posts like Sara’s is only possible thanks to the generous support of our fundraisers. You can donate to support our work in local cancer research by visiting: Virtual Gift – Supporting Local Research – Friends of the Cancer Centre
