Take on Northern Ireland's most iconic building for Friends of the Cancer Centre

Tuesday, 2 February 2016

We're calling on local daredevils to abseil one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic buildings to raise vital funds to support cancer patients.

Friends of the Cancer Centre’s Take on the Tower Abseil on the 9th and 10th April is giving brave supporters the chance to take on Belfast City Hospital’s famous yellow tower block, Northern Ireland’s 4th tallest building, as they make a 190ft adrenaline filled descent right in the heart of the city.  This is only the second time that the building has been abseiled and the first event in 2015 saw an incredible 270 people take on the challenge, raising over £150,000 for Friends of the Cancer Centre along the way.

One such person was Friends of the Cancer Centre’s clinical research fellow, Dr Phil Turner, who conquered the tower in 2015.  Calling on others to follow in his footsteps, Dr Turner said:

“I’ve been funded by Friends of the Cancer Centre for three years and the support of the charity means that I’m able to investigate and develop new ways to treat local patients.  Working in the hospital I get to see the great work the charity does to support local patients, not just by funding my post, but through the life-changing work it does through the Cancer Centre. I wanted to give something back as a way of saying thank you for the support the charity has given me and the Take on the Tower Abseil was the perfect opportunity.

“The abseil itself was scary but incredible at the same time and I would encourage anyone thinking about signing up to just go for it.  Not only is it a great event to be part of, but all money raised will make a real difference to the charity and the incredible work it does to support local patients.”

Claire Hogarth, Friends of the Cancer Centre’s fundraising manager, said:

“Last year was our very first Take on the Tower Abseil and we were overwhelmed by the number of people who took on the challenge and the sum of money raised from the event.  We’re hoping this year’s abseil will be just as successful, so we’re calling on any daredevils out there to take on the challenge.  Places for the abseil are already filling up fast, so if you want to be part of this great event, sign up today.”

Registration for the event is £40 per person and each participant is asked to raise a suggested minimum sponsorship of £150 for the charity.  Participants must be over 14 years of age.  If you would like to Take on the Tower and help raise vital funds for Friends of the Cancer Centre, you can register here or call us on 028 9069 9393.
