Colleagues from Barclays Bank get set to 'Climb Everest' at Stormont
Tuesday, 10 May 2016
A team of over 10 colleagues from Barclays Bank is set to run up Stormont hill in East Belfast a gruelling 181 times on Saturday 14 May 2016 to raise vital funds for Friends of the Cancer Centre.
The ‘Climb Everest Challenge’ will involve 181 ascents of the iconic hill, equivalent to the vertical ascent required to conquer Mount Everest from sea level, 8,848 metres.
Colleen Shaw, Chief Executive of Friends of the Cancer Centre explains the importance of people volunteering to undertake fundraising:
“We would like to say a huge thank you to the team of colleagues from Barclays for their support. The ‘Climb Everest Challenge’ is a really unique event and the team are investing their time, effort and energy and putting themselves through something that is very physically demanding to help others.”
Colleen continues: ‘It will be a tough day for the team but every ascent of the hill will make a real and meaningful difference to the work we do to support cancer patients locally. Our work focuses on three key areas - clinical care, patient comfort and care, and research – which all directly impact on patients and staff in the hospital. From funding 31 additional doctors, nurses and researchers, to providing thousands of cups of tea and coffee for patients throughout the hospital, everything we do makes a big difference to thousands of patients. All of this would not be possible without the support of people like the team from Barclays and we wish them the best of luck with their fundraising and for the big day.”
Paul Davies, Cash Management Specialist, Barclays Bank adds:
“We were keen to create an innovative way to raise funds for Friends of the Cancer Centre. Climbing Everest must be one of the hardest physical challenges to undertake so we thought why not in some way try to replicate it. The Hill at Stormont is synonymous for its steepness and as a prominent local landmark it seemed to be the perfect location. We hope the public will all get behind us on the day and help us to surpass our fund raising targets. We will be wearing the charity’s bright yellow vests so we will be hard to miss!”
