Did you know that January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month?

Our staff member ‘in focus’ for January is Laura, Gynae Oncology Nurse, who cares for women undergoing surgery for gynaecological cancers at the Belfast City Hospital. Laura is the main point of contact for her patients and their loved ones, ensuring they are supported and informed throughout their treatment.

Cervical cancer signs & symptoms

Laura shared more about what we should be looking out for and she is encouraging us to attend cervical screening when called.

“Cervical cancer is a cancer that is found anywhere in the cervix (the lower, narrow end of the uterus (womb) that connects the uterus to the vagina).

“The main risk factor for cervical cancer is an infection called the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV can cause abnormal cell changes in the cervix that may develop into cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine can help with the prevention of cervical cancer, and is currently offered to all children between the ages of 12 and 13.

“Some key signs and symptoms you can be looking out for when it comes to cervical cancer are:

  • Vaginal bleeding that’s unusual for you – including bleeding during or after sex, between your periods or after the menopause, or having heavier periods than usual.
  • Changes to your vaginal discharge.
  • Pain during sex.
  • New, persistent, unexplained pain in your lower back, between your hip bones (pelvis), or in your lower tummy.

“It is important to remember that these symptoms may be caused by something other than cervical cancer, but it is vital you contact your GP to have them checked out.

Cervical screening

“Cervical screening is crucial in the prevention of cervical cancer. In Northern Ireland you are invited for a cervical smear test if you are between the ages of 25 and 64, and you should attend even if you have previously received the HPV vaccine. A smear test is quick and painless for most people. I would encourage everyone to attend for smears when invited by your GP.”
