What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a government scheme available to charities.

It does not have a cost to you as the donor or to the charity when you sign up for Gift Aid.

This is because as a UK taxpayer you have already paid tax on the money you’re donating

It means that we can claim 25p of tax for every £1 you donate.

Some donations are not eligible for Gift Aid, please see the information in the boxes below to ensure you can Gift Aid your donation.

For the charity to claim Gift Aid on eligible donation simply fill out the declaration form below!

How Gift Aid helps Friends of the Cancer Centre

In the last financial year we were able to claim £90,000 of Gift Aid. This Gift Aid amount could allow us to fund 3,600 hours of nursing care from the charity’s team of specialist nurses or 37,800 free cups of tea or coffee for those attending treatment.

FAQs

What donations are not eligible?

Charities cannot claim gift aid on any donations:

- From a non-UK taxpayer
- From residents of the Channel Island or Isle of Man
- Made on behalf of someone else or a group of people
- Made on behalf of a company
- To a family member or friend participating in an event where the charity is contributing to their costs
- Made in return for goods, rights, or services
- Money raised from collections (such as funeral collections)
- Money raised from a sale of goods such as in a cake sale, car wash or through the sale of raffle tickets

Why am I being asked if it is my own money that I am donating?

Gift Aid is tax relief based on your personal taxed income. If you donate on behalf of either a company or another person, this is not from your personal taxed income; and charities are not eligible to claim Gift Aid on these donations.

If I change my mind or circumstances change, can I cancel my Gift Aid declaration?

Yes, you can cancel your declaration at any time.

All you need to do is, let us know. You can send us an email [email protected] or contact our Team on 028 9069 9393.

What does the Gift Aid declaration commit me to?

Nothing.

It just ensures that if you choose to donate to Friends of the Cancer Centre, we can claim an extra 25% back from the government.

Do you need a signature?

No, HMRC only require a tick-box declaration along with your full name and address.

I already signed a Gift Aid declaration for another charity, can I still Gift Aid my donation to Friends of the Cancer Centre?

You can directly support as many UK charities as you wish using the Gift Aid scheme so long as:

The total Gift Aid reclaimed by all the charities that you support does not exceed the total tax that you have paid in the applicable tax year.

What if I am retired?

You may still pay tax on a private pension plan or a savings account or pay Capital Gains Tax if you sell property or shares. If so, you are eligible to complete a Gift Aid declaration.

What if I am a high rate taxpayer?

As a higher rate taxpayer, if you declare your donations on your tax return, you can claim a rebate based on the difference between the higher rate and the basic rate when you fill in your self-assessment form. The charity can still only claim 25%.

How long does the declaration last for?

After you sign up for Gift Aid it normally covers past, present and future donations. We can back-claim four years and we’ll continue to do so until you ask us not to so, please let us know if anything changes.

Still have questions or need to update your details?

It’s important to let us know if you stop paying tax or if you change your name or address, so that we can update our records.
