Earlier this week we shared Neil’s story of a testicular cancer diagnosis and the care he has received from our Testicular Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, Mel. As a thank you to the charity for the support Neil received, his friend David Sharkey took on the mammoth challenge of seven Olympic triathlons in seven days in June 2024.
Sharing more about the challenge, David said:
“I chose to support Friends of the Cancer Centre, as I’ve seen first-hand how their great work helps people when they need it most, not only the person affected, but their family and wider circle.
“Like all great ideas, I was chatting with a friend, Trevor, and we came up with the challenge. Without Trevor and his wife Helen’s support in organising it all, I’m not sure it would have happened.
“It was a great challenge to do, as the local community really got involved and joined me in all the different parts. On one of the runs, there were about 30 of us. It was great going to the next stage and not knowing who would be there to join me, and it was an added bonus to get to know new people along the way. Towards the end of the week there was one evening it was raining hard, which was tough, but I made it round with everyone’s support.
“We were delighted to raise over £6,000 for the charity. If anybody is thinking of doing something to raise money for Friends of the Cancer Centre, I would say is go for it! It will surprise you how many people will be willing to help and how generous people are. As they say, every little helps, and you will be supporting a fantastic cause.”
