Newry Canal Cycle 2016 – what you need to know

Our first ever Newry Canal Cycle kicks off tomorrow and ahead of the big event, here is a quick reminder of some of the key information you need if you’re taking part.  We ask that you read through the below before tomorrow, paying particular attention to our safety advice, and to contact us in advance if you have any queries or if there is anything we can help you with.  Call us at the office on 028 9069 9393 or contact Claire on 07900782492.

Starting point – all participants will start off from Portadown.  We will have a registration desk set-up at a gazebo along the towpath which can be accessed from the carpark adjacent to the Tesco carpark, Meadow Lane.  Registration will also be clearly sign-posted from the carpark.

*Parking – parking is available at the carpark adjacent to the Tesco carpark,  Meadow Lane in Portadown town centre.

Registration – all participants are required to register with our team on the day before setting off on their cycle.  Registration will start at 11am so on arrival in Portadown, please make your way to our gazebo to sign in.  When registering you will be given a map of the route and you’ll also have the opportunity to hand in any sponsor money you have with you on the day.

*Cycle start time – the cycle will start at 12 noon and in order to ensure participant safety, this will be staggered allowing small groups to set off at any one time. Our team and Marshalls will be on hand at the starting point to direct you when to start.

*Cycle route – you will be given a map of the route when you register with our team on the day.  We ask that all participants follow this map closely and we will also have marshalls travelling with the cyclists to help you along the way.  Marshalls will also be on hand along the route to assist with road crossings and any other issues which you may need assistance with.

*Safety – it is essential that your bike is in good working order and all participants must wear a helmet. We also advise that you come prepared with suitable clothing and footwear, including raincoat should you need it. We also ask that each participant has a mobile phone with them in case of emergencies.

*Emergencies – travel marshalls will be on hand at all times along the route and if you get into any difficulty while taking part in the cycle please let one of them know, or you can contact Claire who will be on site on the day on 07900782492. Her number is also on the back of the map you will be given on the day, but we also suggest you save this on your phone before the event starts. If you need immediate medical attention, please call 999 immediately.

Cancellations – if you cannot make it on the day we would really appreciate if you could let us know in advance. You can call the office on 028 9069 9393 or contact Claire on 07900782492.

We hope you have a great day and be sure to take lots of pictures and tag us on Facebook and Twitter @FriendsCCNI #NewryCanalCycle.
