At 850m (2,789 ft) Slieve Donard is the highest of the Mourne Mtns. The views from the summit are extensive and on a clear day the Isle of Man, Wicklow, Donegal, Wales and Scotland may be seen.
The Walk Route - Distance 5.5 miles
|
Leave the car park in Donard Park and head towards the mountain (there will be a dedicated team of route marshals to guide you). Follow the Glen river uphill through an old woodland of Scots Pine, Oak and Birch and cross the stile. Follow the track above the river for about 2kms, heading towards the saddle between Donard and Commedagh. From the summit, return by the same route, staying close to the wall until the saddle is reached again.
"If you aren't a committed walker it may sound like quite a hike, but it's not a race and everyone takes it at their own pace, enjoying the company as well as the views. When I did it, we had sunshine all the way and the scenery was like a picture postcard. When we got to the top, we really felt on top of the world! I'd urge anyone to give it a go."
